Chapter Twenty One
A cool breeze swept through the city streets as Natasha approached âThe Bat and Wickets' pub. The weather had been steadily warming as summer was approaching but a clear day mixed with an easterly wind had kept the capital cool. A congregation of smokers was standing outside the pub, mostly men in their late twenties and early thirties and carrying the early onset of small beer bellies. Each one was sporting a football shirt with a pair of well-worn jeans, between each puff a quick jibe at a particular team or praise for a home team player was fired out in quick succession. Natasha quickly caught their attention as she walked toward them, but none of them had the courage to approach her. She was well out of their league and a rejection of any of the men in front of the lads would receive a thorough array of jokes and mockery all night.
Lauren was already waiting outside the pub when Natasha got there, the two hugged and gave each other a quick kiss on the cheek. Most of the smokers had ducked back into the pub at this point. The two still hanging outside struggled to keep their cigarettes in their mouths as their jaws made an involuntary drop toward the pavement.
"Hey, Hun. You look gorgeous" Lauren said with a smile from ear to ear.
"Thank you. You look stunning as usual" Natasha replied before adding
"So how was the date?"
Mention of a date soon sent the remaining smokers back inside, the slim chances of them mustering enough courage to ask one of the ladies out were quickly extinguished. Whoever these girls were dating probably didn't have a beer gut and think that Kevin's Kebab House was an acceptable venue for a first date.
Lauren smiled.
"I'll tell you all about it at Roland's" she replied with a rye smile.
The two walked quickly, both eager to not spend too long on the streets as the wind picked up. Lauren had opted to wear a dress for their evening out and was having to hold it down anxiously or risk looking like Marilyn Monroe on a poster. Such an event would of likely caused whiplash to passing motorist eager to sneak a peek. Eventually, they got to the bar and found a corner table with some extra seats for their friends who were joining them. The bar was busy and with every minute it appeared to get busier. The bouncers were already on shift; usually, they didn't show up until nine at the earliest. It was around this time that sports fans and people getting a drink before going out to dinner would be leaving, however not tonight. The bar had barely a soul walk out but hoards walk in. Unbeknownst to Lauren and Natasha several bars around them had been closed due to a fire that afternoon at a Chinese restaurant. The fire inspector wouldn't allow the bars to stay open as the roof of the restaurant had partially collapsed and the integrity of the adjoining bars was in question.
